NS Warns of Continued Train Delays This Autumn Due to Persistent Issues
Challenges with train shortages, speed limits, and increased maintenance projects expected to cause delays throughout the season.
Passengers using Dutch rail services should brace for a challenging autumn, as the Dutch Railways (NS) and ProRail have announced ongoing disruptions due to a combination of factors. CEO Wouter Koolmees of NS and CEO John Voppen of ProRail highlighted several issues, including train shortages, speed limitations on unstable tracks, and a significant increase in track maintenance projects. These problems are expected to cause further delays, particularly on high-speed lines where trains that typically travel at 300 kilometres per hour are restricted to just 80 kilometres per hour due to unstable viaducts.
Both organisations are facing staff shortages, particularly in crucial roles such as electricians, mechanics, and conductors, which are exacerbating delays and slowing progress on necessary repairs and upgrades. While NS has ramped up recruitment and training efforts, the impact of these initiatives will not be immediate.
With a 30% increase in planned construction projects for 2025 compared to 2022, the disruptions are likely to persist beyond autumn. Passengers are advised to anticipate delays and crowded trains, especially as many return to work and school after the summer holidays. Despite efforts to address these challenges, Koolmees acknowledged that the problems will not be resolved quickly.
