Mopeds and Scooters Banned from Grote Markt
New traffic rules aim to enhance pedestrian and cyclist safety in Groningen's city centre
Starting Monday, January 20, mopeds and scooters will no longer be allowed on the Grote Markt, Oosterstraat, and Gelkingestraat in Groningen. This measure aims to enhance safety for pedestrians and cyclists in these areas, which have seen frequent conflicts and dangerous situations due to moped and scooter traffic. The ban does not apply to e-bikes, including fat bikes.
The Grote Markt, now designed as a pedestrian-friendly space with cyclists as guests, will undergo a public awareness campaign to ensure a smooth transition. From January 20 to February 10, fences, banners, and directional arrows will guide cyclists on the designated routes. Cyclists traveling north-south can use routes from the Oude Ebbingestraat past City Hall to Gelkingestraat or from Oosterstraat along Vindicat and the Market Hotel towards Kreupelstraat. East-west cyclists can navigate via Rodeweeshuisstraat and Kwinkeplein.
Enforcement of the new rules will begin after the campaign ends on February 10. The city emphasizes the importance of adherence to these regulations to create a safer and more enjoyable environment for all users of the Grote Markt.
