Starting at the end of November, train passengers at Groningen Central Station will need to follow new walking routes due to ongoing renovations as part of the Groningen Spoorzone project. This work, involving sewerage and the installation of new infrastructure behind the historic station building, will continue until mid-January 2025, leading to temporary route adjustments and limited shelter availability during inclement weather.

The project is divided into two phases, with walking routes changing twice over the renovation period. During the first phase, new paths will direct passengers between the west and east sides of the station. In the second phase, beginning on November 25, routes will be further adjusted. Signage around the station will guide travellers, and detailed maps will help them navigate the altered paths.

The changes are necessary to allow the installation of restored platform roofs early in 2025. Extensive digging for new foundations and installation pipes is underway to support public address systems, lighting, and check-in posts. While the station’s shops remain accessible, they will be reachable via alternate paths until the work concludes in January.
