Negative swimming advice has been issued for the Hoornseplas due to the presence of swimmer's itch. This advisory has been in effect since July 24, as reported on Zwemwater.nl. Swimmer's itch, caused by larvae of flatworms found in the droppings of ducks and other waterfowl, results in red bumps and itching that can last up to three weeks. A similar advisory is in place for Strandje Koetshuis in Veendam.

In addition to swimmer's itch, several other water bodies in the region have received negative swimming advisories due to poor water quality, which can lead to stomach and intestinal complaints. These locations include Moekesgat in Ter Apel, the Reitdiep in Garnwerd, Parc Emslandermeer in Vlagtwedde, and the Bouwte in Midwolda.

Warnings have also been issued for waters contaminated with blue-green algae, which can cause rashes, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Affected areas include the Lettelberterplas, Camping Wedderbergen in Wedde, Langebosch in Borgerswold Veendam, the Zwaneveldsgat near Kolham, the Veendiepplassen in Bellingwolde, Kemperpark Bellingwolde, Pagedal Stadskanaal, and various beaches of the Lauwersmeer.

Despite these advisories, the quality of swimming water in other locations such as Paterswoldsemeer, Ruskenveen near Hoogkerk, Stadsstrand, Kardingeplas, Meerstad, and the recreational lake near Engelbert remains good.
