The Zwolle court has sentenced 69-year-old Arie K. from Delft to three years of unconditional imprisonment after he was caught transporting nearly 11 kilograms of crystal meth, on the way to the parking lot at IKEA in Groningen

The retired man was arrested in March near Zwolle when his vehicle was flagged by ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) technology. Upon inspection, police discovered two Gamma moving boxes in the van, which contained freezer boxes packed with methamphetamine. The street value of the drugs was estimated at around €540,000.

During the court hearing two weeks ago, K. claimed he was unaware of the contents of the boxes. He said an old cellmate had contacted him via Instagram and offered him a “moving job.” According to K., he believed he was transporting household goods. However, the court found this explanation implausible and sided with the Public Prosecution Service, which had demanded the three-year sentence.

The judge described K.'s version of events as “hard to believe” and ruled that he must serve the full prison term.
